Treasurer Laura M. Montoya Announces Programs and Outreach Director to Advance Financial Equity in New Mexico
SANTA FE– The New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office is excited to welcome Christina Perea as the new Programs and Outreach Director. Christina’s proven track record in curriculum design, public relations, marketing, and innovative programming strategies at the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) and the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is instrumental in driving the office's outreach initiatives and the development of beneficial programs.
“In addition to our constitutional and statutory responsibilities, and the management of our state’s $17+ billion portfolio, I believe we have an opportunity to directly impact the lives of New Mexicans by bridging the wealth divide and uplifting our most financially vulnerable citizens,” stated Treasurer Montoya. “The State Treasurer’s Office has expanded or developed programs such as the New Mexico State Treasurer’s Achieving a Better Life Experience (NM STABLE) program, Baby Bonds, and Financial Fitness.
Christina’s passion for social justice and her professional experience will elevate these critical programs to new heights and make a lasting impact on communities across New Mexico.”
The Treasurer’s Office has already achieved significant milestones in the execution of these programs, including rebranding NM STABLE and passing legislation that exempted clawbacks on NM STABLE accounts, growing NM STABLE to be the second most successful of its kind in the nation, and implementing our online, personalized financial fitness tool for state employees, NM Enrich. With Christina’s leadership, the New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office is poised to build on this momentum, advancing these programs and ensuring they yield positive results for every New Mexican.
“I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of Treasurer Montoya’s team and continue their great work,” said Perea. “I look forward to helping the office expand the NM STABLE program, support efforts to make financial literacy a graduation requirement in our
high schools, and establish a NM Baby Bonds program while maintaining a high level of public service to New Mexicans.”
Christina is deeply rooted in New Mexico, having been crowned the 310th and 311th La Reina de la Fiesta de Santa Fe and continuing to travel across New Mexico and Colorado performing Spanish New Mexican music. Christina is married to her husband, Adrian, City of Santa Fe firefighter, and together have three daughters.
