WATCH: NM State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya Sounds Alarm On How House Republicans’ Budget Harms New Mexico Treasurer Montoya: “We call on all Americans to demand
lawmakers vote against this budget and protect Americans and our economy.”
Santa Fe - Earlier today, in partnership with Americans for Responsible Growth, New Mexico State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya, alongside Illinois State Treasurer Michael W. Frerichs, Connecticut State Treasurer Erick Russell, and Massachusetts State Treasurer and Receiver General Deborah B. Goldberg, called on members of Congress to oppose Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans’ reckless budget bill, which would slash Medicaid and other vital federal programs that millions of children, working families, veterans, and small businesses families rely on.
After the House Republicans’ budget bill passed late Tuesday, the state treasurers joined the call to outline how gutting Medicaid and other programs would strain state resources and threaten the health and safety of the country’s most vulnerable communities.
Speakers urged lawmakers in both chambers to protect the economic security of families, workers, and states, as the budget bill moves through Congress.
New Mexico State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya:
“Speaker Mike Johnson’s and the House GOP’s recently passed budget, which includes cutting Medicaid by $880 billion over the next 10 years, will have disastrous consequences for the vulnerable New Mexicans and Americans across the country who rely on Medicaid for critical medical coverage.”
“When people do not know if they can afford basic medical coverage or necessities, they hold back on spending, stifling economic growth and deepening financial uncertainty, stress, and fear.”
“When the federal government slashes funding, hospitals, doctors, offices and clinics that depend on these funds will be forced to either raise premiums and co-pays for patients or shut down altogether.”
“When I talk about Medicaid or the detrimental effects of speaker Johnson's plan to cut critical federal benefits, I'm not talking about just a government program—I'm talking about the choice between life and death forced upon hard working people that cannot afford the right to health care under our current system, let alone a system that will be inaccessible and fiscally unsustainable by design.”
