PRESS CALL: State Treasurer Warns GOP Budget Would Rip Apart the Current State Budget, Leave Millions Hungry

Santa Fe – On a press call hosted by Americans for Responsible Growth, New Mexico State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya will join state financial leaders from across the country to expose the catastrophic consequences of Republicans' reconciliation bill, which contains provisions to end free school lunch programs and make the largest cut to food assistance in American history to finance tax breaks for billionaires. As families with children, seniors, and veterans rally nationwide against these devastating cuts, speakers will detail how the Republicans’ assault on nutrition programs threatens not just individual lives, but entire state economies.

The state financial leaders will warn that these cuts would lead to higher grocery costs for millions of Americans and increase poverty, food insecurity, and hunger as millions lose their food benefits—forcing countless families to choose between groceries and other basic needs. Republicans’ senseless and heartless budget would take away more than $1.3 billion in funding that keeps 5.2 million women, infants, and children fed while cutting $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that helped 42 million low-income people buy groceries per month in 2024.

Additionally, Republicans’ SNAP cost-sharing proposal would require New Mexico to pay 25% for benefits and 75% of administrative costs, totaling $357 million, starting in fiscal year 2028 while also cutting billions in federal funding for other programs. Speakers will also reveal how the proposed budget could cost states billions in lost economic activity while forcing cuts to vital government services to make up the deficits.
