The New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office is proposing statewide Baby Bonds legislation to ensure every child born in New Mexico has a pathway to a secure financial future.

2026 Baby Bonds Initiative
In New Mexico, Baby Bonds are being presented as government-funded trust accounts managed by the State Investment Council. The policy is aimed at closing the wealth divide among New Mexicans and strengthening the state's economy. Once approved, the law is designed to provide children born in New Mexico with $7,000 which will be placed in a state-managed trust account. The investment will grow over time and become accessible when the child becomes an adult and after completing an approved financial literacy program. The funding may be used on eligible wealth-building expenses, including attending a trade school or postsecondary institution, purchasing a home in New Mexico, starting a New Mexico business, a modest down payment on a reliable vehicle, enhancing retirement income, and more.
We invite you to review our 2026 Baby Bonds Policy Discussion Presentation to learn more about the initiative. This presentation features New Mexico-specific data provided by ECOnorthwest, illustrating the long-term, generational wealth-building impact this program can have on our communities.

New Mexicans should be aware that other similar policies and resources are currently available to assist with long term financial planning. These programs are structured differently and aim to achieve different outcomes. Nonetheless, they must be included in the discussion about the long-term financial benefits of Baby Bonds.
The information below is being provided solely as a resource. These programs do not address the long-term wealth disparities nor provide the equitable benefits that Baby Bonds can achieve.
