Dec 30, 2008: Community Organization Honors Treasurer Lewis for Leadership, Public Service

SANTA FE – New Mexico State Treasurer James B. Lewis was recognized for his public service and leadership by the Albuquerque chapter of the Links, Incorporated at its annual awards ceremony and dinner on December 27, 2008, at the Albuquerque Grand Airport Hotel.

“I am humbled by this recognition,” said Treasurer Lewis. “Having served the public in city, county, state and federal office, it is my personal philosophy to continuously do what is legal, ethical, and good for the community at every level of government.”

The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation with a focus on four programs: Services to Youth, The Arts, National Trends and Services, and International Trends and Services. The organization implements these programs through public information and education, economic development, and public policy campaigns.

The Albuquerque chapter of the Links, Incorporated annually honors individuals whose work in their community encompasses the mission and vision of the organization’s four programs. Treasurer Lewis received the chapter’s 2008 National Trends and Services Award for his public service, leadership and work over the years to improve healthcare, expand adequate housing, and address domestic violence at the state and federal levels.

“James B. Lewis is highly respected in the community. He has been a trailblazer for African-American men and others,” said Helen Wash Asbury, president of the Albuquerque chapter of the Links, Incorporated. “He is a leader and a role model for young men and women in education, the political arena, and his beliefs in being successful and prosperous as a young African-American man. He has been influential in getting young men and women to get out and vote for what they believe. He presents himself as a professional, experienced and well educated man. He is aware of issues that affect not only African-Americans, but all Americans. He gives of himself freely, without the need for rewards or awards. He supports many of the issues and programs that the Links, Incorporated strive for in the community and we wish to honor him for his long journey.”

The Links, Incorporated was established in 1946. The organization has 270 chapters in 42 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Its membership includes over 12,000 professional women. More information about the organization can be found at www.linksinc.org.
