May 7, 2007: State Treasurer Appointed to Capitol Buildings Planning Commission

Santa Fe – In the recently adjourned Legislative Session, Senate Bill 1061 was signed by the Governor adding the State Treasurer to the Capitol Buildings Planning Commission (CBPC) replacing the New Mexico Staff Architect (Section 15-10-1 NMSA 1978). According to State Treasurer James B. Lewis, “I’m honored to be named in state law as a member of this commission, which is charged with addressing state government facility needs and providing guidance for future needs in several of the largest metropolitan areas of the state.”

In addition to the State Treasurer, the 11-member CBPC includes four members of the Legislature, two from each house, appointed by the New Mexico Legislative Council (which also staffs the CBPC in coordination with the Staff Architect and other Property Control Division staff), the General Services Department Secretary, the Transportation Department Secretary, the Cultural Affairs Department Secretary, the Finance and Administration Department Secretary, the Public Lands Commissioner, and the Supreme Court Building Commission Chair.

Created in 1997 to study and plan for long-range state government facility needs in Santa Fe, the CBPC makes continual updates to the master plan and reports annually to the Legislature. In 2002, the CBPC's authority was extended to include Albuquerque in the overall master plan. In addition to naming the State Treasurer to the Commission, this bill expands its authority to include Las Cruces. Commission meetings are scheduled in May, August, September, and November of 2007.
