About The Treasurer's Office
 

A native New Mexican, James B. Lewis previously served as State Treasurer when he was appointed to the office in 1985 by Governor Toney Anaya and was subsequently elected for a four-year term from 1987-1990. During his tenure, Lewis automated the warrant and collateral compliance system, established the Remote Electronic Banking System, and created the Office of the State Cash Manager within the State Treasurer's Office.

Lewis, a Democrat, has served with federal, state, county, and city agencies in both elected and appointed positions during his career in government management and finance. Most recently, Lewis was the Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Albuquerque. Previous positions include City of Albuquerque Chief of Operations, Chief Clerk/Chief Executive Officer of the New Mexico State Corporation Commission, Director/Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, Director of the Oil, Gas and Mineral Division of the New Mexico Commission of Public Lands, Chief of Staff to Governor Bruce King, and Bernalillo County Treasurer.

Lewis, an Army veteran, holds undergraduate degrees in education and business administration and a Master's degree in Public Administration. A widower with four adult children, Lewis resides in Albuquerque.
